Telemedicine is an upcoming field in health science arising out of the effective fusion of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) with Medical Science having enormous potential in meeting the challenges of healthcare delivery to rural and remote areas besides several other applications in education, training and management in health sector. It may be as simple as two health professionals discussing medical problems of a patient and seeking advice over a simple telephone to as complex as transmission of electronic medical records of clinical information, diagnostic tests such as E.C.G., radiological images etc. and carrying out real time interactive medical video conference with the help of IT based hardware and software, video-confernce using broadband telecommunication media provided by satellite and terrestrial network.
There are several definitions of telemedicine. According to World Health Organisation, telemedicine is defined as, “The delivery of healthcare services, where distance is a critical factor, by all healthcare professionals using information and communication technologies for the exchange of valid information for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease and injuries, research and evaluation, and for continuing education of healthcare providers, all in the interests of advancing the health of individuals and their communities”.
The healthcare infrastructure in India has witnessed a thrust in investment by private players as well as government. The leading government hospitals are currently providing quality healthcare in the Metro cities across the county, but the supply of quality healthcare has not been able to keep up with the demand especially in primary health centres (PHC) at tier 2 and 3 towns. The biggest reason for this is the time &moneyinvolved in setting up newer centres/hospitals andavailability of super specialist & clinical experts at PHC. Hence the populations in tier 2 and tier 3 towns frequently travel to metro cities for specialist and super specialist consult due to lack of the same facilities in these smaller towns.
The inertia faced by hospitals to expand to Tier 2 and 3 towns due to high cost, the increased demand for specialist care in these towns coupled with mobility revolution in India, presented Tata Communications the perfect platform to build a unique Virtual Clinics and Personal Consult platform that aims at utilizing the existing resources of the big government hospitals to make their super specialist & clinical experts available at PHC across tier 2 & 3 towns.
Tata Communications has created Gloheal – a Tele-Medicine solution, a synergistic convergence of Information Technology with Medical Science. It is an end to end managed service comprises of hardware’s, network & new edge portal for virtual consultation. This is done using live video conferencing and real-time medical record sharing/communication portals. he combination of telemedicine technology paired with specialty medical devices will enable a remote physician to "see" the patient as if they were actually in the exam room with the patient. The specialist can examine the patient, review vital signs and patient history, provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment (which can usually be delivered locally), request referral, send laboratory test request and provide prescription to the patient. This minimizes or eliminates the need for travel for both the patient as well as the specialist.
